ZACH MOORE (The Gough Street Sessions, The Deep End, SF)

Zach Moore’s love for electronic music runs the gamut with different styles in his live sets and recorded mixes. For this week’s Jungo Road feature, Zach has created a tech funk set peppered with progressive house, electro beats, and vocals. He’s learned from experience that in the deep pool of San Francisco DJ talent, it doesn’t hurt to be versatile.

Zach Moore was first smitten by house music on the back patio of the legendary Phoenix Hotel in the summer of 1999. From that fateful encounter at SF’s infamous Wet Party, a long love affair with house music began and led him to begin DJing in 2003. Zach is well known in the San Francisco dance community for his three-year affiliation with The Deep End; along with several recent collaborations with The Space Cowboys (The Ghost Ship, Breakfast of Champions and Paso Loco) and Opulent Temple (Opulent Temple Massive).

Creating mixes is in Zach’s blood; he publishes his own podcast, The Gough Street Sessions. They began in 2005 as a monthly release and have been published regularly since with only a brief hiatus or two. San Francisco loves them and the series garnered national attention while airing on XM Radio in 2006 and 2007. Zach tells us that he enjoys sharing recorded mixes as much as playing live; though he agrees there are few greater thrills than moving a packed dance floor with a live set.

Zach’s friends tell him that his mixes help them manage their everyday challenges: a rough day at work, a long flight home or even a painful break-up. Zach believes that the recorded mix can be a much more powerful way to reach out to people than a live set. For himself, there is also something about the creative process involved in making a new mix that he finds personally enriching or even healing depending on what’s going on in his own life. Finally, he always feels more connected to his music and more confident in his skills as a DJ because of the creative process.

Zach’s upcoming performances include this Saturday July 25th at The Superhero Street Fair (Indiana @ Cesar Chavez, San Francisco, CA); Sunday, August 2nd at Ship Shape: A Sporty Affair with Nautical Flair a Space Cowboys Burning Man Fundraiser (Kelly’s Mission Rock, 817 Terry Francois Boulevard, San Francisco, CA ); Friday, August 28th at Freeform vs. Dubalicious (Shine Dance Lounge, 1337 Mission Street @ 9th, San Francisco, CA); Friday, September 4th 5pm at Opulent Temple camp (Burning Man, Black Rock City, NV).

Zach Moore's love for electronic music runs the gamut with different styles in his live sets and recorded mixes.

As a special treat to Jungo Road supporters this weekend, we have a live recording of Meat Katie at the Opel 7 Year Anniversary show last week in San Francisco. It’s full of brutal breakbeats, twisted techno, classic tracks, and enough up-front material to keep even the snarkiest trainspotters placated. Your Mom will love it.

I suppose one of the perks of having your own blog is to ramble on about irrelevant nonsense (which this article is the perfect opportunity to do). Meat Katie, for my money, is really the king of tech-funk. There is a triumvirate, I’d say, but at the top of the heap is the godfather – Meat Katie. His name taken from an old British porno, MK has always had a unique style that cannot be described as house, breaks, or techno – rather the bastard child of all three. MK records were always full of force and style – and always on the dark side, which I loved. Aside from my brief sojourn into funky breaks, I was a huge fan of the “Whole9Yards sound” from the start. W9Y is MK’s much beloved former label, put to rest – and resurrected in the form of Lot49. Now five years old already, Lot49 has become the premier tech-funk label in the world and a staple in DJ crates spanning multiple genres.

I first met Meat Katie at LA’s best kept secret – Monday Social – back when it was at Las Palmas. Each subsequent time we have crossed paths he has been humble, geniune, funny, crass (always), and just plain cool – rare (believe me) in this DJ scene we all frequent. Evidence of MK’s status is that I found myself dancing next to BT at Monday Social that night – and the dancefloor at Las Palmas was about 10 square feet. Since then, I have gone on to see MK thoroughly punish dancefloors at multiple shows in San Francisco – none more memorable than Love Fest 2007. It is all the more thrilling that MK (and Lot49 label-mates) will be making that journey down Jungo Road this coming summer to Black Rock City. *editors note: they will most certainly be taking Route 447 and not Jungo Road en route to Burning Man – but it sounded better to say it that way.

Be sure to check out Meat Katie’s scorching 90 minute set from the Opel 7 Year Anniversary party – streaming below, download link above, and podcast available on iTunes (search: Jungo Road). Special thanks to Zach Moore and the Gough Street Sessions podcast for a copy of this un-interrupted mix. Be sure to check out Zach’s podcast for additional sets from the Opel 7 Year party and enough additional free music to make your head spin.

<itunes:summary>As a special treat to Jungo Road supporters this weekend, we have a live recording of Meat Katie at the Opel 7 Year Anniversary show last week in San Francisco. It's full of brutal breakbeats, twisted techno, classic tracks, and enough up-front material to keep even the snarkiest trainspotters placated. Your Mom will love it.

I suppose one of the perks of having your own blog is to ramble on about irrelevant nonsense (which this article is the perfect opportunity to do). Meat Katie, for my money, is really the king of tech-funk. There is a triumvirate, I'd say, but at the top of the heap is the godfather - Meat Katie. His name taken from an old British porno, MK has always had a unique style that cannot be described as house, breaks, or techno - rather the bastard child of all three. MK records were always full of force and style - and always on the dark side, which I loved. Aside from my brief sojourn into funky breaks, I was a huge fan of the "Whole9Yards sound" from the start. W9Y is MK's much beloved former label, put to rest - and resurrected in the form of Lot49. Now five years old already, Lot49 has become the premier tech-funk label in the world and a staple in DJ crates spanning multiple genres.

I first met Meat Katie at LA's best kept secret - Monday Social - back when it was at Las Palmas. Each subsequent time we have crossed paths he has been humble, geniune, funny, crass (always), and just plain cool - rare (believe me) in this DJ scene we all frequent. Evidence of MK's status is that I found myself dancing next to BT at Monday Social that night - and the dancefloor at Las Palmas was about 10 square feet. Since then, I have gone on to see MK thoroughly punish dancefloors at multiple shows in San Francisco - none more memorable than Love Fest 2007. It is all the more thrilling that MK (and Lot49 label-mates) will be making that journey down Jungo Road this coming summer to Black Rock City. *editors note: they will most certainly be taking Route 447 and not Jungo Road en route to Burning Man - but it sounded better to say it that way.

Be sure to check out Meat Katie's scorching 90 minute set from the Opel 7 Year Anniversary party - streaming below, download link above, and podcast available on iTunes (search: Jungo Road). Special thanks to Zach Moore and the Gough Street Sessions podcast for a copy of this un-interrupted mix. Be sure to check out Zach's podcast for additional sets from the Opel 7 Year party and enough additional free music to make your head spin.
