Rising out of the 90’s Drum ‘n Bass scene in San Francisco, Smoove quickly became a fixture on the underground Breakz circuit in 2001 DJ’ing with Space Cowboys and their mighty Unimog. These days his signature power-funk Breakz sound can be heard every weekend all over San Francisco’s night life, from underground warehouse parties to his residencies at The End Up, 1015 and Mighty.

All his hard work in the night club trenches has earned him membership in nitevibe.com’s DJ Dream Team since 2004 and was voted Best DJ 2008 by the readers of the S.F. Bay Guardian in their annual “Best of the Bay” issue. Taking his sound to the airwaves, Smoove has been featured on XM Satellite Radio’s Thump Funk show (XM 80) as well as Below Zero on Energy 92.7 and was a frequent guest on Future Breaks on KUSF.

Currently, he can be heard on Fog City Funk every Wednesday night at 8pm PST on Nu Skool Breaks Radio (nsbradio.co.uk) In 2004 he, along with Donna Matrix, started publishing the underground magazine NewsBreakz and more recently launched NBz 2.0 (newsbreakz.com) the on-line version in late 2008.

Simply put, Smoove is one of the quintessential taste makers in the San Francisco Breakz scene today and can always be relied on to bring a big party fun sound that makes the crowd go giddy on the dance floor.

For this week’s Jungo Road feature, Zach has created a tech funk set peppered with progressive house, electro beats, and vocals. He’s learned from experience that in the deep pool of San Francisco DJ talent, it doesn’t hurt to be versatile.

Zach Moore was first smitten by house music on the back patio of the legendary Phoenix Hotel in the summer of 1999. From that fateful encounter at SF’s infamous Wet Party, a long love affair with house music began and led him to begin DJing in 2003. Zach is well known in the San Francisco dance community for his three-year affiliation with The Deep End; along with several recent collaborations with The Space Cowboys (The Ghost Ship, Breakfast of Champions and Paso Loco) and Opulent Temple (Opulent Temple Massive).

Creating mixes is in Zach’s blood; he publishes his own podcast, The Gough Street Sessions. They began in 2005 as a monthly release and have been published regularly since with only a brief hiatus or two. San Francisco loves them and the series garnered national attention while airing on XM Radio in 2006 and 2007. Zach tells us that he enjoys sharing recorded mixes as much as playing live; though he agrees there are few greater thrills than moving a packed dance floor with a live set.

Zach’s friends tell him that his mixes help them manage their everyday challenges: a rough day at work, a long flight home or even a painful break-up. Zach believes that the recorded mix can be a much more powerful way to reach out to people than a live set. For himself, there is also something about the creative process involved in making a new mix that he finds personally enriching or even healing depending on what’s going on in his own life. Finally, he always feels more connected to his music and more confident in his skills as a DJ because of the creative process.

Zach’s upcoming performances include this Saturday July 25th at The Superhero Street Fair (Indiana @ Cesar Chavez, San Francisco, CA); Sunday, August 2nd at Ship Shape: A Sporty Affair with Nautical Flair a Space Cowboys Burning Man Fundraiser (Kelly’s Mission Rock, 817 Terry Francois Boulevard, San Francisco, CA ); Friday, August 28th at Freeform vs. Dubalicious (Shine Dance Lounge, 1337 Mission Street @ 9th, San Francisco, CA); Friday, September 4th 5pm at Opulent Temple camp (Burning Man, Black Rock City, NV).

Zach Moore's love for electronic music runs the gamut with different styles in his live sets and recorded mixes. For this week's Jungo Road feature, Zach has created a tech funk set peppered with progressive house, electro beats, and vocals. He's learned from experience that in the deep pool of San Francisco DJ talent, it doesn’t hurt to be versatile.

By that time, Aaron Pope and I had finished “Bassline” and were looking to work on a new track. He sent me some sick sounds which solidified the groove and I found an Australian hip-hop artist by the name of Estae who was willing to contribute his vocals. The result was a hip-hop infused electro-breakbeat track that was slammin’ till around the second breakdown. I needed one more element…

Enter Emmett Barnes. Best not to tag that name and let word get back to Emmett that this song exists. He was an unruly employee of mine at a staffing agency who’s continual tardiness and delinquency eventually cost him his job. He did not turn in his final time card before the deadline and as a result his check was delayed. What ensued is the voicemail that he left me over the weekend that I will never forget. I recorded it because I knew it was gold – and when I came across this sample on my hard-drive, the question of the second breakdown was answered. It would be Emmett Barnes, motherfucker.

Erase Records snatched up the track in early January after some successful road testing in San Francisco at the Space Cowboys legendary New Year’s party “Breakfast of Champions”. Aaron and I were so inspired by this, that we finished another track before Erase had the release scheduled – “You Got What”… which became the B-side.

Then came the news of the remixers… Scott Cooper (Potty Mouth), Wasabi (Erase), and Mike Hulme (Lot49, U&A)! Suffice to say, Aaron and I are on cloud nine over this release and we will be back in the studio before you know it to crank out the next “Breakfast of Champions” banger!
