I first heard the name Dylan Rhymes when I discovered Whole9Yards – the UK record label that would forever change my taste in electronic music. It started with Dark Globe, then I discovered Meat Katie and Elite Force. I knew Lee Coombs from Fingerlickin’… but this was the beginning of my love-affair with all things tech-funk.

The record store I frequented the most in LA at the time was on Melrose Avenue… one of the shop DJs knew I was into breaks and ordered me all kinds of great stuff from the UK. After moving from LA to Chicago and Gramophone Records being my new home for music – it didn’t take long for the shop to know all Lot49 music would be purchased (at $12 per 12″) by yours truly.

Almost as quickly as I had discovered this music, I made my first visit to San Francisco – where a talented young DJ named shOOey was playing Salty at a small bar in the Mission. I knew at that moment that this town “got it”… not less than 4 hours later I would hear Melyss play my all-time favorite Rhymes track Party People at an underground Opel event. This was May of 2005. It was decided: we had to move to San Francisco.

It is fitting that we feature Dylan Rhymes this week – the 8th anniversary of Opel is this weekend. I know SF has become as special of a place to Marvin as it has to me, so I decided to ask him a little about his experiences in the city on the bay:

JR: When did you first hear about breaks being popular in San Francisco?
DR: Before my first trip, which seems an age ago now, I had heard there was a big party scene in SF. For such a relatively small city I was amazed at how many people were in to the whole underground culture. Luckily having always worked with Opel promotions there I wasn’t DJing to a one genre crowd. They were very accepting of all styles of dance music which was great for me as I play a lot of different music.

JR: What is the most special about visiting and/or playing in San Francisco for you?
DR: I love going to SF because it is one of the most welcoming places I have ever been to. There is a great spirit amongst the people that live there and I have made some amazing friends. The shows are always fantastic but you gotta prepare for the after party onslaught

JR: Can you share with us a memorable moment from your gigs at Opel over the past several years?
DR: One of many special moments I can remember was playing @ Mezzanine with my Label partner Meat Katie. Prior to the party there was a fashion show of all local talented designers and manufacturers. It blew my mind the work and effort that went in to this production and how well it went. It was only my 2nd or 3rd time in SF and this experience cemented the fact that it would be my number 1 destination to play.

JR: What is it like playing at Opulent Temple at Burning Man?
DR: It is an experience which I find hard to describe as every time I think about it I conjure up different moods and memories. You have to go to Burning Man to fully comprehend and appreciate the hedonism of it all. I guess the easiest way I can describe playing there is to imagine thousands of people in front of you that are having the best time of their life and you are responsible. At the risk of sounding like a Trance DJ, I would say EUPHORIC…if that’s allowed?

JR: What is different about playing in SF compared to other cities around the world?
DR: The main differences are the crowd is very open to different styles and they are out to party. It’s a very simple process for the Bay Area people……they go out…..they get down……they enjoy themselves! SIMPLE!

I would like to thank Marvin for participating in this years “Take Five” (we did a five question interview with Syd Gris last year prior to the Opel 7 year anniversary). His music has been an inspiration to me and I am thrilled we could feature an amazing mix of his this week on Jungo Road.

A little more about our friend Marvin…

Dance music has been the biggest part of Rhyme’s life from a young age. Inspired by early hip hop and electro a la Kraftwerk and Doug E. Fresh, Marvin purchased his first set of decks at 15 and caught the bug in a bad way. Rhythm Design Studios in Uxbridge became the birthplace of Outsiders, Drake and Beaver’s much-lauded project for Junior Boy’s Own Chicago influenced Jus Trax label. Friend, DJ and London mainstay Clive Henry then joined the team and the trio became Peace Division, a project that gained props from every corner of dance music without exception.

Since then he has cemented his reputation as one of the leaders of the breakbeat and tech house scenes through his output through Kingsize Records, Meat Katie’s Whole9Yards and Lot49 labels and his own Blue Black imprint. Besides original work, Beaver has also remixed the likes of Deep Dish, Infusion, Dave Gahan, BT, Overseer, Unkle and Puretone while he has collaborated with Meat Katie, Christian J, Force Mass Motion (as Silencer) and Anthony J Gorry (on his 2004 album, Dead Famous).

Catch Dylan Rhymes in the US over the next month or so starting this Saturday February 27th at Mighty (SF) for the Opel 8 Year Anniversary, March 6th in Tucson, AZ at The Rock, and then March 16th & 18th at SXSW as part of Lot49’s Texas invasion!

RAYDEUS (GuerillaBass, Stirty, JungoRoad.com – San Francisco)

JungoRoad.com is proud to welcome Darin Eriksen (aka Raydeus, his DJ handle) as our newest official contributor. As a mover and shaker in the San Francisco underground dance music scene, he brings a distinctly West Coast point of view to the proceedings. To mark the occasion, we’re featuring his newest mix as this week’s exclusive download.

In what city, region/state, and country do you currently reside?

Nation of San Francisco, recently moved to The Mission district.

When did you or your family notice your interest in music?

Probably when they heard loud rock music coming from the basement of the house. My family was very Christian and conservative. So, if anything sounded in any way “Satanic”, I got yelled at and the record would be taken away. That all changed when I was in college; my music collection grew.

When did you get interested or exposed to electronic dance music?

It goes back to 80’s electro-pop and hip hop. I listened to everything from New Order to LL Cool J. The common thread was the groove and the bass. I remember Beastie Boys’ “Brass Monkey” and LL’s “Goin’ Back to Cali” making people go nuts at school dances. Looking back, it was the heavy Miami bass kicks that really got people going. I followed the evolution and melding of styles into the 90’s with Massive Attack and Portishead. And then, in 1996, I heard Underworld’s “Born Slippy NUXX” and it turned me inside out. I dove head first into electronic music after that. In addition to being an Underworld fanatic, I started listening to The Chemical Brothers, Tricky, Aphex Twin, The Orb, and Orbital a lot.

What do you like (or moves you most) in any type of music?

There are so many intangibles, but #1 would have to be inventiveness. I love hearing new ideas in music; shit I have never heard anyone do before, and yet it sounds so good it’s as if it always existed. Like the first time I ever heard The Pixies. Their music was so brilliant, different, and amazing, you knew it would have an impact on everything that came after it.

What do you like (or moves you most) in electronic dance music?

Well, like I said, bass is really important. Deep bass and a solid groove are sometimes enough on their own. But what takes a track to the next level is a great hook. “Born Slippy” has that instantly recognizable synth line that, whenever played, people lose their shit.

When did you start DJing?

Around 2002 or so, I bought decks and started playing dub & downtempo. I didn’t have a name yet. I worked my way up to spinning progressive house after about a year and, then, I got caught up in the big breaks wave that took hold around 2004. Finally, I started getting some bookings, started a crew, started throwing parties, and named myself Raydeus.

What do you like about DJing?

Having a good excuse to spend truckloads of money on a glorified hobby! Really, being able to justify the huge amount of time I spend listening to music, and lots of money buying music. Also, that the communities rise up around the music you’re playing, and that the act of DJing is for the sole purpose of making people happy. That’s why I do it… it’s certainly not about the money.

Are you associated with any record labels or crews?

Until recently I was affiliated with Pronoia, a crew I started with my friends Pieter Rizen and Damien Jones back in ’04 with a fundraiser to help get enough voters registered to vote Bush out of office. The idea was that Pronoia would only do events that were charitable, hence the idea of “others conspiring to benefit you.” That crew name is now retired as of this year, after five years full of memorable parties. I’ve now joined two other crews in SF, GuerillaBass and Stirty. And, of course, JungoRoad.com. Here’s to new horizons!

For what types of music genres or styles are you known?

I think most people got to know my breakbeat side and I became known for playing really super hard, dirty breaks. Then, that sound evolved to incorporate electro house and tech funk.

For what types of music genres or styles do you want to be known?

I still play the banging, grindy stuff. But, I have realized pouring on 100% full throttle dirty bass is not the answer to keeping the dancefloor enthralled. You have to dose it just right, and hold a really solid groove, to get your grip on people. I have developed a more groovy, deep, minimal tech side, to balance out the harder side, that has been getting very good reaction.

What are other DJs and music producers that you admire?

Lee Burridge – My favorite when it comes to techno & deep tech. I have been taking more cues from his DJing than anyone else lately.

Lee Coombs played my single favorite set I heard this past year (at Opel Productions’ post LovEvolution party). Another true master of holding a groove. I hadn’t danced that hard for a while.

Krafty Kuts – The man is a genius producer (in the form of dope original tracks and remixes) and DJ. No one brings the heavy funk like Krafty.

What the best venue (in your judgment) you played at in the world?

Burning Man, at a big sound camp like Opulent Temple or a dope art car like the Neuroweapon. Or, really any outdoor venue, especially at night. There’s nothing better than rocking out in the open air with a sea of bouncing freaks and blinky lights in front of you.

Speaking of Burning Man, did you experience whatever it was you were looking forward to this year?

I would say so! I counted 10 times that I got to DJ in 7 days I was out there. The Duck Pond ruled!

Any specific music tracks stand out on the playa?

I think I played Tim Deluxe’s “Storm In a Teacup” more than any other track. It’s an incredibly versatile track.

Are you participating in the upcoming Burning Man?

TBD!

J Hazen starts off this week with a mix that should immediately grab your attention. He put together a mix of brokenbeat, 2 step, dubby IDM love. Whoaaaa, you might say. Why not breakbeat? Well, he told us, “I’ve just been finding so much in these styles that I had to put together a mix to show my take on it; its nice to see what you can do when you’re a bit outside your comfort zone.” We agree. Artists going outside the(ir) norm…off the beaten path…is what Jungo Road is about.

I was in San Francisco last weekend for the LovEvolution festival. I seeked out the Strategik float to see if J Hazen was performing and…would you believe…he was performing right then. Serendipity. I was lugging around two cameras and a tripod for interviews but I still got my freak on with his glitchy breakbeat sounds. No need to worry about him bailing on the beats. Instead, he is keeping it varied and fresh; including anything and everything.

We got together with J Hazen (John Hazen) for a brief interview and we ended up deep into a discussion about his lifelong passion for music and his approach in its creation and performance. Below, we bring you the gems. So, get to know this creative music producer and performer a bit more. Long live the adventurers off the beaten path!

When did you or your family notice your interest in music?
I started playing instruments at nine. So, I did show an early interest. But, it was when I picked up guitar at 14 and started writing music that I got really serious about it. My parents saw I was pretty into it and were supportive from the beginning even if they didn’t really understand what I was trying to do…and…despite how much I sucked at times. After many years, I think I may have broken through a little though; after I sent my dad a new track he replied with an e-mail that included the phrase “dude….the bass!”

When did you get interested or exposed to electronic dance music?
It was toward the end of high school. I was a complete metal head [editor's note: Bassnectar is a metal head too.] and didn’t want to have anything to do with anything else. But, I had a friend or two that were always tossing in the odd dance music CD—all of which were awful in retrospect—but some of those tunes at least opened my ears to electronic music. It wasn’t until I was in college and eventually met my sister’s boyfriend, now husband…DC based soundFLUX who is a breaks DJ, that it became my main focus. It was the first time I’d really connected with bass and beats like that and it started a huge snowball effect that is still going at the moment. I remember him playing the Infiniti remix of The Red Pill in his basement on two 15″ subs, which were outrageously overpowered for the tiny space, and thinking “ooohhhhh so that’s what this bass thing is all about!”

Do you have any formal training in music? Or been in any bands?
Yea, I was in a lot of bands from the ages of about 15 to 21, playing guitar, but never really got past a few gigs and some decent recordings. I found it incredibly difficult finding a healthy creative balance between all the members of the band, let alone finding my own voice. That was one of the biggest factors that drew me to production…its all you and you know exactly where all the credit (or blame) lies. I graduated from New York University with a music degree, and was studying music theory seriously since the beginning of high school up through college. I was also trained on sax for 10 years, but as far as guitar/electronic music/dj’ing are concerned its all self taught.

Then when did you start DJing?
I only started DJing in 2007. I’d been buying vinyl years before then and figured I might as well learn the basics of mixing, but I never fell in love with it. I’ve always been a producer first and foremost. I had a hard time going from the total control of production to the relative lack of control with vinyl; the “I wish I didn’t have to wait another 16 bars for the breakdown” sort of thing. I was awful and not really into it, but since I was collecting huge amounts of music anyway, I would piece together mix sets in my sequencer for fun, so I learned a lot of the nuts and bolts of mixing before I ever really started doing it live.

In 2007, I started using Ableton and immediately fell in love with DJ mixing with it. I’m not in the 12 loops running at all times hyper-complexity camp as far as my approach to Ableton is concerned. I’ve always considered myself more of a selector type of DJ instead of a technical mixmaster. But, it does allow so much more flexibility in how I do mix; especially in terms of tempo and genre changes, looping, rearranging, not to mention the FX processing you can do as you go along. Its just incredibly liberating to be able to react to the audience and tailor the music to exactly what’s needed in the moment.

I think the only trick I have going for me in my DJing is my obsessive digging for new music. I shop for music every day and I don’t see how I could ever stand out as a DJ unless I did that. For awhile, it seemed the consensus was that digging was somehow becoming a lost art. When in fact, I think it’s more important now than ever. There is such an avalanche of new music coming out; true, a lot of which probably doesn’t need to be. But, now instead of having select labels dictating quality control, each individual DJ can exercise their own if they have the drive and the patience, which is crucial in my opinion. I think whoever complains that there isn’t enough good music coming out just hasn’t put in the hours.

Tell us about being a music producer; when, how, and more.
Production is hands down the most important thing to me. I started around 2002. I didn’t set out to be a serious producer from the beginning; but, just wanted to experiment, have fun and get some of my ideas down in some medium. The first track I considered a success was the remix of D:Fuse’s Everything With You that I did with Austin based DJ^3. At the time, I was working at System Recordings, the record label that released it, and swiped the remix parts from the office so I could build up my remix chops. We just did it for fun…and the label and D:Fuse ended up loving it. It was the first thing I ever had released (this was in 2005), it ended up on a few compilations, and was a huge confidence booster. I’m also proud of 700ft. It was the first thing I did that I felt really reflected the vibe I was going for. It had a slew of wicked remixes and was the first thing I had on vinyl.

As far as my approach to writing music goes, I try to keep a very “zen-like” approach. I don’t force things as I go and try to just let everything happen of its own accord. Once I get that first little bit down in the beginning, its important for me to get my expectations and ego out of the way and let the music dictate where it wants to go. I’ll sketch something out and listen to it looped, and let the melodies and bits and pieces pop into my head themselves, and then just program it out. I’m not a noodler, I don’t even use a keyboard when I write. Basically, it’s all formed in my head then written down in my sequencer. I mainly use Sonar with the same well worn plugins including a UAD1, Battery, Waves bundle, z3ta+, and Reaktor.

What do you like, or moves you most, in music?
I’m a huge sucker for good melody, harmony, and clever rhythms, no matter how they’re delivered. I like musical songs that really pull things out of you and toy with your expectations. Even though there never seems to be a shortage of pounding dance tracks that can work on a dance floor, I think a more creative and subtle musicality is lacking from too much of it. I like stuff that’s intricate and graceful, which could apply to all kinds of music, even really heavy stuff. I always like when I have the feeling that I know how a song or melody or chord progression is going to go, that I know what to expect from it, but instead it does something completely different and far better than anything I could expect. It’s sort of that “lightbulb moment” that makes a song really smack you in the face.

I think there is a middle ground between truly different, creative music -and- accessibility. A lot of what I really love falls into that. I definitely like plenty of straightforward dance floor tracks that don’t cover any new ground too. But, all the music that keeps me going as a musician is the stuff that goes somewhere I haven’t been yet, or captures a different mood or creates a new atmosphere. There are a lot of people out there with really unique and inspiring visions, and their music is what I’m drawn to the most.

What are those music producers and DJs that you admire?
The first producers to really open my eyes from a production standpoint were guys like Bil Bless (SOTEG), Dave Tipper, Si Begg, Andy Page, Kilowatts, Lawgiverz, etc.; big twisted bass and beats, excellent sound design, vivid, technical production, but with really ingenious music underlying it. They are just as good musicians as they are technicians. I’ve always admired outlandishly good production and programming; and people who aren’t afraid to jump off into the deep end and come back with something totally individual and fresh; and who don’t just simply rehash whatever has worked for them in the past.

The producers I’ve been getting all worked up over these days are guys like Floating Points, Boxcutter, Hudson Mohawke, Bibio and Bullion, and pretty much everybody else in this mix. I literally can’t keep up with the amount of exciting music that’s coming out right now, across a ton of genres, and there is such a glut of new talent it’s scary.

You’re known for breakbeat. Do you want to keep focusing there?
I don’t want to be known for any genre actually! I always liked the types of musicians where you never knew exactly what you were going to get from them, but you knew it was going to be good no matter what it was. I think that’s the point that I’d like to get to with people. If you stick to one thing too closely, then that is the type of audience you will attract. Which, in turn, pressures you into continuing along the same lines to placate them. I don’t want to be in that position.

I see my music expanding to include a more diverse palette of sounds and styles. But, I always want it to sound like a J Hazen track. I want to aim for things that are more off the beaten path than what I’ve already done; but, without becoming inaccessible. I want to make a lot more bangin’ dance floor tracks too. I’ve always been a very slow producer and I’ve been working on speeding things up. Because, if I want to do all the things I want to do, I really have to pick up the pace.

What’s next for you?
I’m coming off a pretty busy stretch of DJing. So, I’m planning on taking it a bit easy to focus on production more for the near future. I do have some nice releases lined up with Sound of Habib including two tracks on October 19th called Forerunner and That’s What They All Say followed by Danger Danger and Artificial Thing shortly thereafter.

Thanks!

She is known in the breakbeat scene for tight sets of big beats and travels the world playing them. Now you can download and listen to her Weapon of Choice Vol. 2 mix here on Jungo Road which includes her soon to be released Welcome to My Dancefloor collaboration with Dustin Hulton featuring Nikki Carabello on illeven eleven recordings.

ICON rose through the ranks of the underground in the ’90s when female DJs and promoters were few. She quickly landed numerous residencies in her hometown of San Francisco and bookings throughout the US and beyond. Now a DJ over a decade, she has held residencies at world famous clubs such as Limelight in New York City as well as San Francisco’s 1015 Folsom, The End-Up and Temple. She has also shared the stage with major EDM players the likes of Underworld, The Chemical Brothers, The Crystal Method, Ladytron, Paul Oakenfold, Adam Freeland, Armand Van Helden, Deekline & Wizard, The Stanton Warriors, The Freestylers, Evil Nine, Elite Force, Uberzone, Bassbin Twins and DJ Icey.

ICON is an deeply participating member of the EDM culture. She is a key member of Sister SF, the influential female DJ collective from San Francisco that creates a thriving DJ community for women in the dance music industry. She established Reverb Records, one of the last vinyl record stores in SF. Radio loves her with residencies and guest spots on programs such as Thump Funk on XM Satellite Radio, Boombox Mix Sessions on Sirius, Solid State on K-ROCK, and iBreaks in the UK. She shares the Editor-In-Chief title of the San Francisco LovEvolution Guide. Finally, she ranked in Shejay’s “Top 100 Female DJs” and was recently voted as one of San Francisco’s top ten DJs in the 2008 Nitevibe “Top 10 DJ Dreamteam” Poll.
