Symbiosis Gathering

The music at the festival will include musicians, bands, DJs and producers from all over the world. Styles sweep broadly across dubstep legends, jam band rockers, abstract beat scientists and street bass pioneers. Who? How about Les Claypool, Coco Rosie, Amon Tobin, Bassnectar, Freeland Live Band, Caspa, Flying Lotus, Glitch Mob, N-Type, Pretty Lights, Beats Antique, Bluetech, an-ten-nae, Heyoka, Lipp Service, Mimosa, Of Porcelain, Vibesquad, Welder, Babylon System and over a hundred more.

Visual arts are a major focus of Symbiosis. You will find large-scale art installations, body art, a graffiti mural, a full-size art gallery space and live painting and workshops from many talented creators including Alex and Alyson Grey. Performing artists will also roam the venue and inject the community with wild weird wonder.

Learning and integrated education are also central to the Symbiosis philosophy. Expect workshops, playshops, discussions and presentations on a wide variety of subjects from esoteric philosophy and embodied movement to sacred geometry and composting alchemy. There will be a “Wellness Oasis” which has a variety of resources to rejuvenate your body, nurture your spirit, and expand your mind with reiki, acupuncture, tai chi, Capoeira, juggling, etc.

All of this is with a focus on environmental consciousness and ecological sustainability. Food is from organic vendors. There’s a market with sustainable arts and craft merchants, a kids’ area, guided nature walks, eco-arting, a lake for splash wars and water wings, and dishwashing stations to help you make this a no trash, carry-in, carry-out event.

Everybody get up…its time to slam now. Audiovoid serves us an hour and quarter dark psychedelic audio dream. I’ve been collecting and following him and his other project, LayerZ, for years; starting when I bought Kaleideskopique. Close your eyes. Soar. Dive Down. Follow the bass.

Audiovoid and LayerZ are two projects by Lindsey R. Green. He grew up in Northern California and was involved in the metal band Lamia. Following that were influential groups like The Orb, Nine Inch Nails, MBM, and The Art Of Noise. Later on, the west coast organic electronic sound spoke to him and he now creatively explores a whole realm of IDM, techno, psy-trance, D&B, breaks, and electro beats.

Audiovoid began DJing in 1999; a year later, he was actively producing his own electronic music. In 2002, two things happened. First, he compiled 80 minutes of material from various demos and created his first full length CD, Twilight Machine. Second, he began his relationship with MDEX Recordings as they released the sampler Marc Deon Presents SFO Arrivals with his track Post Apocalyptic Bathhouse. In 2003, Ultra Records nominated him a top finalist for a remix he did of Sasha’s Wavy Gravy. 
In 2004 on MDEX, he released his album Disconnect Yourself followed by several singles and remixes.

His recent breaks, IDM, and dubstep releases are on Muti Music or, sometimes, available independently online. Three pages of his releases are available to listen and download from Addictech. Examples include 2006’s Miami Frequency Massacre, 2007’s Whispers From Shadowz (v2.0 available now), and this year’s audio adventure Spit Wods Remixed.

Audiovoid, Lindsey that is, isn’t only an audio artist. He has also a demonstrated talent at drawing. His drawings at three years old were much more realistic than those of the other children. At six, he was in the local paper and was soon winning first or second place in local art contests. Along the same time, Lindsey was really into horror movies which showed up in his art. He began to prefer pen and ink on paper and developed a dark-psychedelic style you see here to the left; much in line with his audio production.

ill.Gates has for us this week a live hour and a half set he recorded while on tour in Edmonton, Canada. It is a real treat and juicy for those of us that love bass, glitch, dubstep, breaks and psy-hop in the mid and half-step tempos. We’ve had a conversation going with ill.Gates for months; both of us aligning our mojo to bring you supah-fresh beats. Out of it, we have two live recordings full of unreleased tracks. [Note: They are so fresh, we have some spoken IDs in the mix. No sharking the tunes! Support the artists.] His Edmonton set is what we bring to you this week. The second set, recorded at his recent Shambhala Music Festival performance, is a delight for later.

illiam B. Gates is a well-known producer from Toronto, Canada who previously produced as The Phat Conductor. Rumor has it, ill.Gates was formed when The Phat Conductor had his left testicle removed in a horrible gardening accident. When the severed gonad was left in a jar of almond milk it quickly mutated into the laptop abusing gremlin we know and love. This is no everyday laptop jockey. This gremlin is a dancefloor destroyer.

ill.Gates has his fingers spread wide in music. He and Robb G have been collaborating for years in the electro-house and breakbeat genres. He’s done work with Bassnectar in the crunky midtempo breaks world. And then there are collabs with renowned producers like Meesha, Little John, Bass Cadet, Mochipet, EPROM, Sub Swara, Stephane Vera and Hip Hop vocalist Masia One. He’s remixed DJ Dan, Myagi and Si Begg; had top selling tracks on Beatport; even a mention in URB as one of their “Next 100″ top artists.

Here at Jungo Road, we’re a fan of ill.Gates recent album Autopirate which includes the collaborations with Meesha, Myagi, and Masia One. Its a creative cohesive auditory roller coaster ride that demonstrates his breadth of production by bridging IDM, chillout, dubstep, hip-hop and breaks. Irma Vep, track 2 from the album, is coming out a second time with a big bang. Muti Music got some of the freshest talent from the Canadian and US dubstep and glitch-hop scenes to rework it. A total of ten tracks, including the acapella and instrumental, hit the streets October this year. Here’s a Jungo Road preview of remixes by Heyoka, Trillbass, Dr. Woogie and Sub Swara.

Finally, the cherry on top is the just released official video for Irma Vep featuring Masia One. Its a 2-D into 3-D layer-on-layer Maraschino.

Part of the mission of Jungo Road is to highlight DJs and producers that bring us music off the beaten path. Years past, Dale played west coast deep house, obscure pop remixes, and breaks. Recently though, he is skewing away from the 120s and 30s to instead bring the beats below 100 and above 160. Yes, he’s playing the outer rim!

When Dale has a itch for so-mo beats, he regularly turns to labels like Muti Music and well as artists such as Heyoka, Timonkey, Nanda, Subvert, VibeSquaD, and LayerZ. For the top side, he checks out the stellar label Breakbeat Kaos for the bangers.

Brooklyn-based DJ/producer Barney Iller goes out of his way to mix cultures and musical styles. He spent his youth bumming around Los Angeles studio sessions, soaking up jazz and the slick L.A. rock of the time. He spent his early career as a classical singer and actor, performing works from Rossini to Rogers & Hammerstein.

Barney Iller found his way to electronic music through funk and 45 culture, rather than the house or UK scenes. Barney Iller uses all these influences and beyond in his eclectic sets; reinterpreting and revolving the musical context while savaging the dance floor. As part of the Plug 4 Burning Man camp, he helps hold it down for funk and funky breaks on the playa. In New York, Barney Iller hosts the Jungle Revival! party along with DJ Shakey; when and where are details closely held so do some digging.

This Saturday May 9th, you can catch Barney Iller at the Fifth Annual Bicycle Fetish Day as part of Bike Month NYC in Brooklyn on Havemeyer between Hope and Grand streets. It’s a block party for your bicycle! He plays most of the day event (noon-6pm) and the afterparty (6pm-10pm). BFD has bike related events including, but not limited to, awards and celebrations of bicycle culture, bike artwork, bicycle rides, and bicycle beautification stations to spiff up your wheels. Food and beer will be available. Local bike-related organizations will be on-hand to share pro-cycling gear and information. Afterparty at the City Reliquary’s spacious backyard at 370 Metropolitan.

This June, Barney Iller returns to Japan to play Sense of Groove at The Room in Tokyo.

Dale Phurrough is driven to bring creativity…the possibility of creativity…to the world and through it improve urban relationships. Everything else falls from there.

Dale has spent a good deal of time in and around electronic music in the American southeast, west coast, and New York City. He was hooked early on electronic music while a teenager in Birmingham, AL; he danced with his friends on a public access channel “club show” for young teenagers. 80s dance pop, like Shannon, was the choice of his Alabama youth. Soon after, he was stomping around Atlanta in black clothes to industrial music from the likes of Front 242, Nitzer Ebb and new wave from New Order, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and remixes of The Cure and Sinead O’Connor.

After a move to Seattle, he was heavily influenced by the west coast deep house scene; particularly a long and still running Sunday night party Flammable. Dale became a house head. Trips up and down the west coast including weekend mornings/afternoons/evenings/nights at the End-Up in San Francisco continued his education. But it was one late night after-hours in Seattle with his friends that he was introduced to CDJ-1000s. A DJ was born. Later in Seattle, Dale created multifaceted shows with live electronica and modern dance with his Social Living production company.

In 2002, Dale attended the Burning Man festival for the first time and was exposed to a fresh diversity of music. Since then, Dale has played and embraced the organic sounds typically coming from the west coast, the underground electronica scene, and the Burning Man community. While he has a solid house head, he leans more toward breakbeat, glitch, broken beat, 2-step, IDM, and dubstep. Dale and Chad North founded Jungo Road in 2009 to increase the exposure of electronic music like these and others like tech-funk in New York City.
