Fast forward to 2010 and he is still searching for records that carry that old school sound while rounding out his repertoire with the massive warbled bass of fidget & bassline house, booty bounce of Baltimore Club, and full-volume funk of the UK breakbeat sound. Tektite is also co-founder and resident of the Brooklyn based breakbeat and electro party Vitamin B, where occasionally you can still hear him return to his roots with an early 90s breakbeat hardcore set.

MACE (Brass Tax, SF)

When Mace is behind the decks, you won’t see any stiff lipped DJ. If he thinks it’s gonna make you move, it’s sure to have him dancing too. We played his mix twice over while finishing up this feature; shaking our thang with his fidget/electro house meets dubbyish hint of breaks and Baltimore booty. Eeeeyeaaaaahhh!

Alex Mace grew up on rock and hip-hop; an adept musician himself. While in San Francisco, he intersected with electronic music through the underground breakbeat scene and Burning Man. He was hooked with the incredible vibe experienced with all those sweaty dancers and knew right away that he wanted to spin electronic music. After a few years away from SF in Austin, TX and Florianopolis, Brazil (where he was involved with a rock-n-roll recording project), he returned to his beloved SF in a big way and has been a major participant in the vibrant underground dance community in the Bay Area ever since.

Looking back over the last few years, Mace had the opportunity to play at many of the major parties in the Bay Area and rocked some of the most established clubs. His wide-ranging musical knowledge as well as his continued love of dancing gives him an innate ability to get the crowd going as he weaves fresh beats in his own energetic style. More recently, Mace has been spinning on the electro side; which shows up in this feature mix. He’s still a lover of breaks so expect better than a simple beat.

Mace continuously involves himself in creative collaborations. For one, he’s a resident DJ with Brass Tax; the SF mainstay of renegade parties and general debauchery. Mace and some active cohorts like Ernie Trevino, JoeJoe and DJ Ding Dong (all über-talented DJs and producers) are passionately working on this year’s Burning Man project — a massive, fully functional boombox and one of the most unique sculptural DJ booths in the world. With one month left before going to the playa, they continue fundraisering through their upcoming parties and online donations, both of which are appreciated.

Other recent collaborations of Mace include Peter Hudson’s Homorouboros and Tantalus, both zoetropes created for Burning Man 2007 and 2008 respectively. Mace personally helped with almost every single component of Homorouboros; not minding getting down and dirty with projects. Mace is also the VIP coordinator for America’s biggest dance music event LovEvolution (Oct 3rd); previously known as San Francisco Love Parade/LoveFest.

You can catch Mace at the following upcoming performances: Wed July 29th @ Shine (1337 Mission St, San Francisco); Fri July 31st @ Friends and Family Camp Out (Saratoga Springs, CA); Fri Aug 7th Brass Tax Boombox Fundraiser @ Jelly’s (295 Terry Francois Blvd, Pier 50, San Francisco); Thurs Aug 13th @ Electric WhoMp @ Roe (651 Howard St, San Francisco); Sat Aug 15th Underground Sound 5 @ Camp Zoe (Salem, MO); Burning Man 2009 (Black Rock City, NV).

When Mace is behind the decks, you won't see any stiff lipped DJ. If he thinks it's gonna make you move, it's sure to have him dancing too.

He's still a lover of breaks so expect better than a simple beat.

Mace continuously involves himself in creative collaborations. For one, he's a resident DJ with Brass Tax; the SF mainstay of renegade parties and general debauchery. Mace and some active cohorts like Ernie Trevino, JoeJoe and DJ Ding Dong (all über-talented DJs and producers) are passionately working on this year's Burning Man project — a massive, fully functional boombox and one of the most unique sculptural DJ booths in the world. With one month left before going to the playa, they continue fundraisering through their upcoming parties and online donations, both of which are appreciated.

Other recent collaborations of Mace include Peter Hudson's Homorouboros and Tantalus, both zoetropes created for Burning Man 2007 and 2008 respectively. Mace personally helped with almost every single component of Homorouboros; not minding getting down and dirty with projects. Mace is also the VIP coordinator for America's biggest dance music event LovEvolution (Oct 3rd); previously known as San Francisco Love Parade/LoveFest.

You can catch Mace at the following upcoming performances: Wed July 29th @ Shine (1337 Mission St, San Francisco); Fri July 31st @ Friends and Family Camp Out (Saratoga Springs, CA); Fri Aug 7th Brass Tax Boombox Fundraiser @ Jelly's (295 Terry Francois Blvd, Pier 50, San Francisco); Thurs Aug 13th @ Electric WhoMp @ Roe (651 Howard St, San Francisco); Sat Aug 15th Underground Sound 5 @ Camp Zoe (Salem, MO); Burning Man 2009 (Black Rock City, NV).

So the summer is starting, and John and I could not be happier about what it is going to bring for Vitamin B. First up, there is one huge change:

VITAMIN B IS RETURNING TO OUR ORIGINAL LOFT SPACE STARTING ON JUNE 5!!!

We realized it was the perfect home for our party, and the people who run the space are kind enough to have us back. Things are going back to the way they were when you first went to our party and fell in love with it. You can expect:

Booming sound in an underground Brooklyn loft
Circus performers and aerial acrobats
Ridiculous beats
Lots of space to dance
A beautiful chill out space

And to add to the craziness, we have caught one of the biggest names in the game to kill it for us!! For the June party, we are bringing in the breakbeat legend, DJ FIXX, to break your faces with his old-school basslines, rapid-fire trebles, and sick melodies. We can’t even express how excited we are for this guy. When we first started talking about throwing vB, we compiled a short list of DJs and producers that we go crazy for and would love to have come down to Brooklyn and join us. Fixx was near the top of that list. He is a legend in the game, and probably made about a quarter of the tracks that you have rocked out hardest to over the past 10 years. With over 150 12″ releases, 50 digital releases, and 5 cds under his belt, you can expect to dance your ass off.

We also have a returning vB veteran coming back to rage out again. DJ PHUNKAE came through back in February and really blew things up with his heavy duty bangers and original bootleg remixes, so we are stoked to have him back again and joining us in June. Now running his own label, Real Hype Records, Phunkae has been putting out some of the hottest tracks of 2009, and you can expect to hear some gems that no one else has heard yet. We love this guy.

Of course you will be hearing from Tarquin, Tektite, and Cecil Grey as well, with a sick mixture of Electro House, Breakbeats, Dubstep, Baltimore booty, and whatever else they feel like playing that packs enough bass to make your hair stand up.

There is just one change that we are making to our policy this time around, but it shouldn’t be a terribly big deal. We need everyone to RSVP on the vitaminbreaks.com website. There is no prepay requirement. Just due to the underground space, we need to keep the party low key, and have everyone put themselves on the list before the event. We will also be enforcing 21+ this time around. So if you thinking you might be coming, just go to www.vitaminbreaks.com and sign up. See, that wasn’t so bad was it?

Upon RSVP, we will reply with the address of the party.

So come join us for a night of dancing, drinking, and laughing on June 5th.

Vitamin B
6/5/09 10pm – 5am
$10 before midnight/$15 after
BYOB
Off the Clinton/Washington A,C,G stops (RSVP for exact address)

For more information, to RSVP, and to download mixes to get you through the next 2 weeks, go to www.vitaminbreaks.com

TARQUIN (Vitamin Breaks, NYC)

Tarquin has prided himself on stomping dancefloors throughout New York and Burning Man since 2005. At this time he got his first gigs starting things up for Wavewhore and some other leading Breakbeat names in NYC. As time moved on and he made the transition from pure vinyl to Serato, his sound progressed from straight UK tear-out into an eclectic mixture of whatever bassheavy monsters he could get his hands on while he steadily transitioned to a headlining act.

Regularly mixing back and forth between Breakbeats, Electro, Baltimore Booty, Dubstep, and the occasional touch of Indie Dance, Tarquin strives to keep bodies moving and jumping all night long. As a result, there are two things that you can count on while he’s playing; there is going to be tons of bass, and you won’t be bored. So break out your dancing shoes and get ready to party.

In mid-2008, Tarquin teamed up with Tektite, another breaks DJ (Mar 31 podcast), to help bring Breakbeats back to New York City. To their disappointment, New York nightlife has been dominated by minimal and progressive house music in recent years, and the Breaks and Electro scenes have split into different factions. As big players like AC Slater and Wavewhore help bring the grimey goodness back, Tarquin and Tektite are doing their part to unite these factions and find new fans with their monthly VitaminB party in Brooklyn. Now in its 7th episode, on the first Friday of every month vB has been regularly featuring big names from the East and West coasts. This month vB will be repping Brooklyn by teaming up with Kestar and Morsy from the Crooked Disco to bang some basslines, and is also very excited to be bringing DJ Fixx back to BK in June to show everyone in New York what they’ve been missing.
