ill.Gates has for us this week a live hour and a half set he recorded while on tour in Edmonton, Canada. It is a real treat and juicy for those of us that love bass, glitch, dubstep, breaks and psy-hop in the mid and half-step tempos. We’ve had a conversation going with ill.Gates for months; both of us aligning our mojo to bring you supah-fresh beats. Out of it, we have two live recordings full of unreleased tracks. [Note: They are so fresh, we have some spoken IDs in the mix. No sharking the tunes! Support the artists.] His Edmonton set is what we bring to you this week. The second set, recorded at his recent Shambhala Music Festival performance, is a delight for later.
illiam B. Gates is a well-known producer from Toronto, Canada who previously produced as The Phat Conductor. Rumor has it, ill.Gates was formed when The Phat Conductor had his left testicle removed in a horrible gardening accident. When the severed gonad was left in a jar of almond milk it quickly mutated into the laptop abusing gremlin we know and love. This is no everyday laptop jockey. This gremlin is a dancefloor destroyer.

ill.Gates has his fingers spread wide in music. He and Robb G have been collaborating for years in the electro-house and breakbeat genres. He’s done work with Bassnectar in the crunky midtempo breaks world. And then there are collabs with renowned producers like Meesha, Little John, Bass Cadet, Mochipet, EPROM, Sub Swara, Stephane Vera and Hip Hop vocalist Masia One. He’s remixed DJ Dan, Myagi and Si Begg; had top selling tracks on Beatport; even a mention in URB as one of their “Next 100″ top artists.
Here at Jungo Road, we’re a fan of ill.Gates recent album Autopirate which includes the collaborations with Meesha, Myagi, and Masia One. Its a creative cohesive auditory roller coaster ride that demonstrates his breadth of production by bridging IDM, chillout, dubstep, hip-hop and breaks. Irma Vep, track 2 from the album, is coming out a second time with a big bang. Muti Music got some of the freshest talent from the Canadian and US dubstep and glitch-hop scenes to rework it. A total of ten tracks, including the acapella and instrumental, hit the streets October this year. Here’s a Jungo Road preview of remixes by Heyoka, Trillbass, Dr. Woogie and Sub Swara.

There’s a freshness to this week’s mix from Mike Hulme. Yes, its from the old country, the UK; seeped in tradition, in depth, in darkness. However, techno is fresh for Jungo Road and Mike’s take on it prevails. He has created for us a mix with dark, at times minimal, techno, tech-house and tech-funk tracks where the beat goes ON!
Creatively, Mike Hulme started producing under the alias Introspective in 2002 at Sinister Recordings blending the best bits of breaks, techno, electro and house with over 20 singles. In his eight years there, he helped establish and run the legendary breaks label while DJing around the globe, mixing Ministry of Sound compilations, and gaining the firm support of James Zabiela, Meat Katie, Elite Force, The Crystal Method, Rennie Pilgrem, Plump DJs, Laurent Garnier, General MIDI, Cut La Roc and Überzone.
Now, Mike is out front and center stage recording under his own name and signed to Elite Force’s U&A Recordings. In this direction, he has released three singles, has four releases in the pipeline, and gained support from peers like Carl Cox, Slam and Laurent Garnier.
On Mike’s business side, he’s worked for Ministry of Sound and DJdownload.com in London; licensed material on Fabric Live, Sony Playstation and Y4K; even worked for a Japanese-owned music licensing company where he composed and sold thousands of ringtones in Asia. Music everywhere!
While writing this feature, we were listening to Mike’s mix for Jungo Road. I had my headphones on part of the time; while the majority was open air with our Velodyne sub pumping. Two friends were listening in and we all agreed this is a fresh side of techno; big props to it! The groove was relentless. It dripped with audio gravy that surrounded us and we wished our minds would leave our body for a short time to float then dive down into it. Mike’s rediscovery of techno, obviously a past love, is welcomed and we look forward to his upcoming releases:
Mike Hulme – 100mg [U&A Recordings]
Butter Party – Eat The Mushroom (Mike Hulme Remix) [Trickery Collective]
Aaron Pope & Chad North – You Got What? (Mike Hulme Remix) [Erase]
Peter Paul – Count Drak (Mike Hulme Remix) [N-Mity Sound]

You want funk? You want breaks? Melyss is in the house; in this juke joint off the beaten path. She’s created a breaks mix with a big dollop of funk like butter on grits. We sat down with Melyss and asked a few questions on how she got where she’s at and the music soundtrack of her life.
Melyss is a San Francisco based DJ with about 10 years on the scene. But how did she get there? She grew up on the east coast in the land of “Liberty and Prosperity”; in Jersey. She was firmly rooted in music by her family that encouraged music in her life. Melyss tickled the ivories and sang in both choir and vocal groups. This created the creative fertile bed that led to the next slippery slope down into musicland.
While in college, Melyss was one of those women that were at every live show; addict of the live band and crowd scene. In the late 90s in her senior year, she visited New York City’s Palladium where Junior Vasquez was performing and Kevin Aviance was doing runway. Magic. She was home. Game on! The experience of 90s New York City clubbing birthed a new DJ…Melyss.
Melyss started DJing in January 2000 and shortly after pulled together with a San Francisco krew including J-Fi, Chonky-T, Jan, and Tonic to throw the night “Mayonnaise”. It was every Tuesday night at Skylark, her first residency, and the source of many a four hour sleep night. Mayonnaise led to a broadening of friends and something called out to her as being needed; a krew of female DJs.
Sister SF was one of the first all female krews in the world. She and the likes of XJS, Siren, and Charlotte the Baroness were all about supporting female DJs. Sister SF was a resource for all things DJ from contracts to tutorials. They had exposure and features with press like Remix Mag, SF Chronicle, and Karma. Sister SF is relaunching this year around supporting women in electronic music production. Melyss requests if there are female producers out there that are interested in contributing to the relaunch, please contact her atClick to reveal email.
In 2005, Melyss joined Opel Productions with DJs Syd Gris, Hoj, and Dex Stakker. She told us, “Syd is a madman and I owe many of my major performances in San Francisco to his productions and party-throwin’ skillz.” One of the best venues she’s played at wasn’t so much a venue…as a float. LovEvolution (previously known as Love Parade and LoveFest) is America’s biggest dance music event; a celebration of the highest forms of electronic music culture and technology, in the belief that dance promotes peace, love, unity and respect. For it, individual floats are created, produced, and booked by krews; one of which is Opel where Melyss played to thousands dancing in the street. LovEvolution along with How Weird St Faire, Halloween, and New Years are regular festivals in which she plays.
Melyss has a strong leaning towards funk; a funkie junkie of breaks and house if you will. She loves music laden with deep funky basslines and old school hop-hop samples; think Neighbour (Homebreakin Records), All Good Funk Alliance, Fort Knox 5, Fingerlickin’s A. Skillz & Krafty Kuts, and Plump DJs. She’s sees herself continuing in that while adding some midtempo funky breaks and remixed disco.
Melyss told us that she loves programming out a set that she knows is going to be killer and then seeing the audience get down to it. She always plans out the beginning of her sets and how that will flow; it’s important to get off on the right foot. She respects the DJs that put the effort into creating a mood through their music selection. For herself, at times she feels bound by having only the music of others to create the atmosphere; nothing wrong with that. Instead, it’s inspired her to begin producing her own music. Melyss, along with her husband Jayo/Big Fat Frog have come together on Cheeky Productions to create both their own music and together a live act. How’s that for circling around to the live vocal performing of her youth?
You can catch Melyss at the following upcoming performances: Saturday August 29th Drunk Funk Champion Sound @ Koko (1060 Geary St, San Francisco); Saturday October 3rdLovEvolution with Opel Productions (San Francisco); Saturday Oct 31th Halloween with Opel Productions (San Francisco).

Peter Paul became a DJ in 1992 when he was 16 years old. Since then, he has grown into the “King of Breakbeat” in Spain. This week’s feature on Jungo Road brings you his mix with super fresh beats of his own.
Peter Paul (Pedro Pablo) has evolved his musical style through experimentation and workin’ the decks. He wasn’t satisfied with playing the music of others so he began producing himself in 1995 with his first release Second Effect, named after his electronic group. Between 2002-2005, Peter rocketed up and out performing to huge crowds and even national TV (TVE1) playing live on Musica 1, a hit show in Spain and other Hispanic countries. He has received many national awards in his homeland of Spain; most recently crowned Best National Producer at the 2008 Spanish Breakbeat Awards.
After producing his own music, Peter Paul started his own independent record label N-mitysound which has released tracks by himself, Matthew McCurry, Stephen Cole, Deibeat, Feeline, Mephisto Odyssey, DJ Isy, David Casal and others. Peter, himself, has also released tracks on Lot49, iBreaks, Sinister and others.
The Spanish breakbeat scene is huge and parties there easily and regularly pull 5000+ fans. As the “King”, Peter Paul is in high demand for the top festivals and events in the country like Live Dance Festival, Retro Festival, Techno Grand Prix, Flash Back, Breaknation, Summer Festival, Winter Festival, and N-mity events. (Check out the video of him at the 2009 Breakspoll Festival in Spain.) Peter travels throughout Europe and countries far from home like Australia.
You can catch Peter Paul at the following upcoming performances in Europe: August 15th @ Summer Festival (Sevilla, Spain); August 29th @ Cádiz, Spain; October 10th @ White Host Music ‘09 (Cádiz, Spain)

Deekline & Wizard are long known in the breakbeat scene for delivering funky big beat inspired dancefloor breaks with vocals and booty that hook you into the groove. Three months ago, they released their 2nd artist album Back Up, Coming Through on Against The Grain records; home of Freestylers, Krafty Kuts, Skool of Thought. Big props to the duo on the album as it brings a variety of genres and tempos while also being solidly produced with the Deekline & Wizard magic.
Just released is the first set of remixes; this set for track #1, Bounce & Rebound. This track is a decidedly British breakbeat track weaved together in collaboration with jungle institution TopCat, UK hip hop exile Fallacy, gospel singer Vic Bynoe and the jazz scat sounds of Yolanda. The duo took it and turned to their global peers for their take on it. Who? How about Bassnectar, Beat Assassins, Fort Knox Five and Dustin Hulton. Yes!
Along with the remixes comes a Bounce & Rebound video with… get this… b-boys from the 1940’s. Check it out!
When Mace is behind the decks, you won’t see any stiff lipped DJ. If he thinks it’s gonna make you move, it’s sure to have him dancing too. We played his mix twice over while finishing up this feature; shaking our thang with his fidget/electro house meets dubbyish hint of breaks and Baltimore booty. Eeeeyeaaaaahhh!
Alex Mace grew up on rock and hip-hop; an adept musician himself. While in San Francisco, he intersected with electronic music through the underground breakbeat scene and Burning Man. He was hooked with the incredible vibe experienced with all those sweaty dancers and knew right away that he wanted to spin electronic music. After a few years away from SF in Austin, TX and Florianopolis, Brazil (where he was involved with a rock-n-roll recording project), he returned to his beloved SF in a big way and has been a major participant in the vibrant underground dance community in the Bay Area ever since.
Looking back over the last few years, Mace had the opportunity to play at many of the major parties in the Bay Area and rocked some of the most established clubs. His wide-ranging musical knowledge as well as his continued love of dancing gives him an innate ability to get the crowd going as he weaves fresh beats in his own energetic style. More recently, Mace has been spinning on the electro side; which shows up in this feature mix. He’s still a lover of breaks so expect better than a simple beat.
Mace continuously involves himself in creative collaborations. For one, he’s a resident DJ with Brass Tax; the SF mainstay of renegade parties and general debauchery. Mace and some active cohorts like Ernie Trevino, JoeJoe and DJ Ding Dong (all über-talented DJs and producers) are passionately working on this year’s Burning Man project — a massive, fully functional boombox and one of the most unique sculptural DJ booths in the world. With one month left before going to the playa, they continue fundraisering through their upcoming parties and online donations, both of which are appreciated.
Other recent collaborations of Mace include Peter Hudson’sHomorouboros and Tantalus, both zoetropes created for Burning Man 2007 and 2008 respectively. Mace personally helped with almost every single component of Homorouboros; not minding getting down and dirty with projects. Mace is also the VIP coordinator for America’s biggest dance music event LovEvolution (Oct 3rd); previously known as San Francisco Love Parade/LoveFest.
You can catch Mace at the following upcoming performances: Wed July 29th @ Shine (1337 Mission St, San Francisco); Fri July 31st @ Friends and Family Camp Out (Saratoga Springs, CA); Fri Aug 7th Brass Tax Boombox Fundraiser @ Jelly’s (295 Terry Francois Blvd, Pier 50, San Francisco); Thurs Aug 13th @ Electric WhoMp @ Roe (651 Howard St, San Francisco); Sat Aug 15th Underground Sound 5 @ Camp Zoe (Salem, MO); Burning Man 2009 (Black Rock City, NV).
