Deekline & Wizard are long known in the breakbeat scene for delivering funky big beat inspired dancefloor breaks with vocals and booty that hook you into the groove. Three months ago, they released their 2nd artist album Back Up, Coming Through on Against The Grain records; home of Freestylers, Krafty Kuts, Skool of Thought. Big props to the duo on the album as it brings a variety of genres and tempos while also being solidly produced with the Deekline & Wizard magic.
Just released is the first set of remixes; this set for track #1, Bounce & Rebound. This track is a decidedly British breakbeat track weaved together in collaboration with jungle institution TopCat, UK hip hop exile Fallacy, gospel singer Vic Bynoe and the jazz scat sounds of Yolanda. The duo took it and turned to their global peers for their take on it. Who? How about Bassnectar, Beat Assassins, Fort Knox Five and Dustin Hulton. Yes!
Along with the remixes comes a Bounce & Rebound video with… get this… b-boys from the 1940’s. Check it out!
When Mace is behind the decks, you won’t see any stiff lipped DJ. If he thinks it’s gonna make you move, it’s sure to have him dancing too. We played his mix twice over while finishing up this feature; shaking our thang with his fidget/electro house meets dubbyish hint of breaks and Baltimore booty. Eeeeyeaaaaahhh!
Alex Mace grew up on rock and hip-hop; an adept musician himself. While in San Francisco, he intersected with electronic music through the underground breakbeat scene and Burning Man. He was hooked with the incredible vibe experienced with all those sweaty dancers and knew right away that he wanted to spin electronic music. After a few years away from SF in Austin, TX and Florianopolis, Brazil (where he was involved with a rock-n-roll recording project), he returned to his beloved SF in a big way and has been a major participant in the vibrant underground dance community in the Bay Area ever since.
Looking back over the last few years, Mace had the opportunity to play at many of the major parties in the Bay Area and rocked some of the most established clubs. His wide-ranging musical knowledge as well as his continued love of dancing gives him an innate ability to get the crowd going as he weaves fresh beats in his own energetic style. More recently, Mace has been spinning on the electro side; which shows up in this feature mix. He’s still a lover of breaks so expect better than a simple beat.
Mace continuously involves himself in creative collaborations. For one, he’s a resident DJ with Brass Tax; the SF mainstay of renegade parties and general debauchery. Mace and some active cohorts like Ernie Trevino, JoeJoe and DJ Ding Dong (all über-talented DJs and producers) are passionately working on this year’s Burning Man project — a massive, fully functional boombox and one of the most unique sculptural DJ booths in the world. With one month left before going to the playa, they continue fundraisering through their upcoming parties and online donations, both of which are appreciated.
Other recent collaborations of Mace include Peter Hudson’sHomorouboros and Tantalus, both zoetropes created for Burning Man 2007 and 2008 respectively. Mace personally helped with almost every single component of Homorouboros; not minding getting down and dirty with projects. Mace is also the VIP coordinator for America’s biggest dance music event LovEvolution (Oct 3rd); previously known as San Francisco Love Parade/LoveFest.
You can catch Mace at the following upcoming performances: Wed July 29th @ Shine (1337 Mission St, San Francisco); Fri July 31st @ Friends and Family Camp Out (Saratoga Springs, CA); Fri Aug 7th Brass Tax Boombox Fundraiser @ Jelly’s (295 Terry Francois Blvd, Pier 50, San Francisco); Thurs Aug 13th @ Electric WhoMp @ Roe (651 Howard St, San Francisco); Sat Aug 15th Underground Sound 5 @ Camp Zoe (Salem, MO); Burning Man 2009 (Black Rock City, NV).

LEE COOMBS “LIGHT AND DARK” ALBUM (12 OCT 2009, LOT49)
Lee Coombs today announced that his long awaited album Light and Dark (Lot49) will be released October 12, 2009. Lee is a taste maker, a hit maker, and a true industry icon. We got to preview the whole album; we know DJs and electronic dance music fans alike are going to love it. Its smashing!
Light and Dark is the culmination of Lee’s nearly 20 years on the forefront of electronic music and takes listeners through a history of electronic music, whether they know it or not. The album carries the raw essence and edginess of 1991’s burgeoning musical birth without seeming contrived. Lee has managed to warp time it seems by creating a masterpiece of a record that seamlessly blends his musical experience and genius from both the past and the present. Grimy old school analog sounds fused with bold techy drum progressions and the BIG tech funk sound that Lee is known for. The innovative use of vocal cuts and Lee’s innate ability to infect all his music with that little touch of dirty sonic mayhem really take this record to the next level.
Light and Dark has classic written all over it. The first two singles from the album are already out. Control was released (with remixes from Rogue Element and 10 Rapid) in November 2008 with big bouncy basslines, trademark percussion and Katherine Ellis’s unmistakable vocals. Right Now is what rave music should be all about; big stabbing key riffs that explode into monster basslines! Its hot on the DMC and Beatport charts. The club mix and a dopamine remix arm DJs with a dance floor anthem to keep fans jumpin’.
Fusing all the elements of the genres he favors is a definitive mark of Lee Coombs’ music. By integrating elements of tech-funk (a genre that didn’t exist before Lee and a few other industry vets like Elite Force, Meat Katie, and Dylan Rhymes coined the phrase), breaks, house, electro and techno, Coombs has once again has broken the boundaries of music and how we perceive it. Light and Dark pushes all the right buttons by somehow fusing essential elements of everything we love about electronic music, those intangible parts that can never be explained, just experienced.
The Light and Dark tour is set for October and November 2009 taking Lee to the Far East, the United States, Australia and Europe. Expect full previews of Light and Dark when Lee takes to the decks this September at Black Rock City, NV at Burning Man.

ZACH MOORE (The Gough Street Sessions, The Deep End, SF)
Zach Moore’s love for electronic music runs the gamut with different styles in his live sets and recorded mixes. For this week’s Jungo Road feature, Zach has created a tech funk set peppered with progressive house, electro beats, and vocals. He’s learned from experience that in the deep pool of San Francisco DJ talent, it doesn’t hurt to be versatile.
Zach Moore was first smitten by house music on the back patio of the legendary Phoenix Hotel in the summer of 1999. From that fateful encounter at SF’s infamous Wet Party, a long love affair with house music began and led him to begin DJing in 2003. Zach is well known in the San Francisco dance community for his three-year affiliation with The Deep End; along with several recent collaborations with The Space Cowboys (The Ghost Ship, Breakfast of Champions and Paso Loco) and Opulent Temple (Opulent Temple Massive).
Creating mixes is in Zach’s blood; he publishes his own podcast, The Gough Street Sessions. They began in 2005 as a monthly release and have been published regularly since with only a brief hiatus or two. San Francisco loves them and the series garnered national attention while airing on XM Radio in 2006 and 2007. Zach tells us that he enjoys sharing recorded mixes as much as playing live; though he agrees there are few greater thrills than moving a packed dance floor with a live set.
Zach’s friends tell him that his mixes help them manage their everyday challenges: a rough day at work, a long flight home or even a painful break-up. Zach believes that the recorded mix can be a much more powerful way to reach out to people than a live set. For himself, there is also something about the creative process involved in making a new mix that he finds personally enriching or even healing depending on what’s going on in his own life. Finally, he always feels more connected to his music and more confident in his skills as a DJ because of the creative process.
Zach’s upcoming performances include this Saturday July 25th at The Superhero Street Fair (Indiana @ Cesar Chavez, San Francisco, CA); Sunday, August 2nd at Ship Shape: A Sporty Affair with Nautical Flair a Space Cowboys Burning Man Fundraiser (Kelly’s Mission Rock, 817 Terry Francois Boulevard, San Francisco, CA ); Friday, August 28th at Freeform vs. Dubalicious (Shine Dance Lounge, 1337 Mission Street @ 9th, San Francisco, CA); Friday, September 4th 5pm at Opulent Temple camp (Burning Man, Black Rock City, NV).
[Notes from Zach: Special thanks to Kramer and Dylan Rhymes. This mix was created with a Pioneer DJM-800 mixer and two CDJ-1000 MKIIIs.]

DIGITAL HIGH (Hardcore Beats, Broke Recordings, BreaksFM, Electrofly Records, BombTraxx, NYC)
Jungo Road is honored to premier to the world – Digital High. Digital High is the new electro house project of the New York City-based international recording artist and DJ known as Wavewhore. With electro house now incorporating harder-edged sounds and dirty basslines, Wavewhore has turned his attention to the genre; Digital High will be used for his 4-on-the-floor electro beats. Have no doubt, the Digital High sound will continue to feature Wavewhore’s signature high energy beats and basslines combined with the quality production and impact that has made his music so popular around the world.
Wavewhore began his career as a guitarist performing in clubs while he was still in high school; his first electronic release dates back to 1992. Times have changed but not his talent. Over the years, Wavewhore has firmly established himself as one of the nation’s leading breakbeat producers with releases on high profile record labels such as Hardcore Beats, Broke Recordings, BreaksFM, Electrofly and Bombtraxx. His cutting edge music has received high level support from many of the top names in the business such as Aquasky, Jackal & Hyde, DJ Icey, The Freestylers, General Midi, The Autobots, and Elite Force.
Wavewhore’s skills behind the decks have also led to headlining appearances across the US and in Europe. Breakbeat Online described him as “NYC’s finest export since the Beastie Boys”. Big name radio also loves him with appearances on BBC Radio 1 London, KISS FM London (Jay Cunning calls him “one of the USA’s finest breakbeat DJ/producers”), WKTU 103.5 FM New York, and Sirius Satellite Radio (Liquid Todd calls him a “breakbeat master”). In New York City, Wavewhore is a resident at the Sullivan Room – one of the city’s premier underground dance music venues.

In a city known for it’s top notch electronic music scene and overabundance of rockstar DJs, it is difficult to stand apart from the crowd in San Francisco. By the time 11am rolls around it could be just about anyone pounding out the beats at The End Up. By Sunday afternoon at Burning Man, when you’re sure you’ve heard just about every international DJ in the world, along comes one DJ who just gives a little *more*. Whether it is his consistently banging tracks, upfront material, or the technical prowess in his mixing, Raydeus has stood out from the rest in the San Francisco DJ scene.
While I only lived in SF for two years, and it could be seen as arrogant for me to make such a claim, I think Raydeus may be among the best tech-funk DJs in the mecca of US dance music. Packed into those two years, I spent many-a-nights jumping from party to party and hearing a wide sampling from the best DJs in a myriad of crews, clubs, undergrounds, and renegades. No one quite did it like Raydeus. His mixsets are on par with the best in the game.
That’s why Jungo Road is proud to include him as one of it’s key contributors. This second mix of his is the proof in the pudding. Just listen and attempt to stand still where you are at; or not speed in your car. Raydeus may be modest. But, one listen to any of the dozens of mixes available on his site and you’ll see the truth of the matter. He is one evil dude.
[Mix notes: This was recorded old-school style with a Pioneer DJM-700 mixer and two CDJ-800s without use of "Master Tempo".]
Those in the Bay Area can catch Raydeus July 12 at the GuerillaBASS Happy Hour @ Triple Crown (1760 Market St, SF) and July 18 at AggRegaTe @ Space Gallery (1141 Polk St, SF).
