MACE (Brass Tax, SF)

Alex Mace

When Mace is behind the decks, you won’t see any stiff lipped DJ. If he thinks it’s gonna make you move, it’s sure to have him dancing too. We played his mix twice over while finishing up this feature; shaking our thang with his fidget/electro house meets dubbyish hint of breaks and Baltimore booty. Eeeeyeaaaaahhh!

Alex Mace grew up on rock and hip-hop; an adept musician himself. While in San Francisco, he intersected with electronic music through the underground breakbeat scene and Burning Man. He was hooked with the incredible vibe experienced with all those sweaty dancers and knew right away that he wanted to spin electronic music. After a few years away from SF in Austin, TX and Florianopolis, Brazil (where he was involved with a rock-n-roll recording project), he returned to his beloved SF in a big way and has been a major participant in the vibrant underground dance community in the Bay Area ever since.

Looking back over the last few years, Mace had the opportunity to play at many of the major parties in the Bay Area and rocked some of the most established clubs. His wide-ranging musical knowledge as well as his continued love of dancing gives him an innate ability to get the crowd going as he weaves fresh beats in his own energetic style. More recently, Mace has been spinning on the electro side; which shows up in this feature mix. He’s still a lover of breaks so expect better than a simple beat.

Mace continuously involves himself in creative collaborations. For one, he’s a resident DJ with Brass Tax; the SF mainstay of renegade parties and general debauchery. Mace and some active cohorts like Ernie Trevino, JoeJoe and DJ Ding Dong (all über-talented DJs and producers) are passionately working on this year’s Burning Man project — a massive, fully functional boombox and one of the most unique sculptural DJ booths in the world. With one month left before going to the playa, they continue fundraisering through their upcoming parties and online donations, both of which are appreciated.

Other recent collaborations of Mace include Peter Hudson’s Homorouboros and Tantalus, both zoetropes created for Burning Man 2007 and 2008 respectively. Mace personally helped with almost every single component of Homorouboros; not minding getting down and dirty with projects. Mace is also the VIP coordinator for America’s biggest dance music event LovEvolution (Oct 3rd); previously known as San Francisco Love Parade/LoveFest.

You can catch Mace at the following upcoming performances: Wed July 29th @ Shine (1337 Mission St, San Francisco); Fri July 31st @ Friends and Family Camp Out (Saratoga Springs, CA); Fri Aug 7th Brass Tax Boombox Fundraiser @ Jelly’s (295 Terry Francois Blvd, Pier 50, San Francisco); Thurs Aug 13th @ Electric WhoMp @ Roe (651 Howard St, San Francisco); Sat Aug 15th Underground Sound 5 @ Camp Zoe (Salem, MO); Burning Man 2009 (Black Rock City, NV).
